"Impact of Heavy Monthly Bleeding" Survey

A survey entitled "Living with Heavy Menstrual Bleeding – A National Survey of 500 U.S. Women" was conducted online in June 2010 by Harris Interactive Inc. on behalf of Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc. Women with heavy monthly bleeding* replied to a series of questions.

A summary of the results from that survey present a picture of the impact of heavy monthly bleeding.

Consequences of Heavy Monthly Bleeding:

  • 74% of women with heavy monthly bleeding said that, during their most recent period, they needed to change their pad or tampon during the night
  • 61% said they needed to use double protection (such as a pad with a tampon) during their period
  • 85% said their menstrual bleeding stained or soiled their underwear

Precautions Taken Due to Monthly Heavy Monthly Bleeding:

  • 90% of women with heavy monthly bleeding said that they worried that they did not have enough pads or tampons with them when they have experienced heavy monthly bleeding while away from home
  • 86% of women have worn dark clothing in case they leaked through their underwear

Areas of Life Negatively Impacted by Heavy Monthly Bleeding:

  • 68% said heavy monthly bleeding negatively impacted their desire to participate in certain activities
  • 55% said their sex life
  • 48% said their sports/exercise regimen
  • 47% said their ability to perform everyday household chores
  • 39% said their social life
  • 37% said their job
  • 28% said their hobbies

Financial Impact of Heavy Monthly Bleeding:

  • 61% said they have to replace underwear, clothing, or bed sheets that have been stained or soiled
  • 59% said they have to spend a lot of money on tampons or pads
  • 52% said they now buy tampons or pads in bulk
  • 17% said they have had to miss work and have lost shifts or jobs due to their Heavy Monthly Bleeding
  • 15% said they have had to miss planned events that they previously paid for, such as concerts or sporting events

*Women aged 18-49 who have not been diagnosed with any bleeding or clotting disorder, typically experience a heavy or very heavy monthly period, and experience menstrual bleeding that soaks through one or more tampons or pads per hour when their period is at its heaviest.
